Increase in Membership Fees (GST)
KEY POINTS
- At the September 2010 NUPE Executive meeting, Executive agreed to increase the annual membership subscription for members.
- This increase was agreed to as part of meeting both the GST increase and increasing costs of the union’s operation in order to retain current service levels and organiser ratios
- The Subscription schedule (for all members except CYF and Brackenridge members) is no longer a set percentage but a series of eleven steps as in the table below. Members can read off your actual fee if you know your fortnightly gross income. One effect of this change is that the percentage increase is different for different members.
- Increases for members on lower incomes have been limited where possible while members on higher incomes who will receive a bigger tax break are asked to contribute proportionately more via the graduated mechanism below.

If a current member, then up to 1 October 2010, you were paying a fee of 0.9% of your annual income up to a limit of $37,000 with a minimum fee of 0.9% of $20,000 rather than the 11 step scale. Now the NUPE fee can range from 0.8% to 1% in that range of salary so some will have a higher fee and some lower. The major change is above the old limit where higher paid members pay a significantly greater amount. Fees may be increased from time to time at the direction of the Executive.
