NUPE GUIDE TO SOPS

We have summerised the SOPS and created an easy to navigate quizz for SOPS to aid you in familiarising yourself with them. It is so important to fully understand SOPS so that your practice is strengthened and from our view, importantly, that you avoid coming to the attention for HR for unsafe practice.

We need to know if they are fit for purpose and will advocate and input into thier ongoing review. 

NUPE has been a strong advocate for the reintroduction of SOPS over the last ten years. Too many staff were being introduced to the floor without any practice guidance and being put through HR proceses when things went wrong. Further, the SOPS outline what safety measures the employer puts in place to keep staff safe. In 2023 OT agreed to reinstate SOPS to equip the current and new staff in residences. These SOPS were released at the end of 2023 with more being released as they are developed. 

There is an ongoing review process for SOPS to ensure they are fit for purpose. NUPE awaits resource to be added to residences to provide robust training and embedding of these SOPS which we understand is in the pipeline for late 2025. 

In the meantime, we are aware that staff are being held to account to SOPS that they may not be familiar with, so NUPE has committed to providing a focus on these SOPS to members which you will find below. 

It is clear to NUPE that if members are to be safe, they are going to have to take personal responsibility for SOP familiarisation until the organisation can implement adequate training and embedding.

SOP GUIDE

Your safety is paramount. You must be equipped with the tools and resources to manage violent behaviour by young people safely. This is the OT SOP that guides practice to do this. Please provide us your feedback if you have views for us to feedback to the SOP Review.
